ZODIAC TAROT
By Lee Bursten
Artist: Luca Raimondo
Self-billed as “the
first true astrological tarot cards,” Bursten and Raimondo's Zodiac Tarot
deserves a nod for being unafraid to explore new territory. Whether it
succeeds or not as either a tarot or a astrological oracle, however, is
probably a somewhat subjective judgment. The astrological associations
are clearly spelled out on each card, but the illustrations -- which all
exude a very contemporary flavor -- don't initially come off as being very
astrolgoical or tarot-ish. Still, the publishers have been kind enough
to provide some reasonable explanations in the accompanying LWB (Little
White Book), with people-oriented illustrations representing the “classic”
planet cards, scenes depicting societal changes being associated with the
“modern” planet cards, zodiac signs coupled with “places,” etc. The suits
are renamed Torches (Wands), Waves (Cups), Clouds (Swords), and Stones
(Pentacles). The court cards are represented by the suit element in the
foreground and the court figure element in the background -- e.g., the
Princess of Wands shows a torch in the foreground and stones in the background.
